The Hollywood Reporter has a lot to say about the pictures vying for best documentary at the Oscars.
As with fiction films, the best way into a story is through strong characters -- and documentary subjects can be more compelling than fictional characters.
"When you think of some of the documentaries over the years, they're some of the best films made, let alone documentaries," Apted says. "There's a tremendous history of fine documentaries, but unfortunately it's kind of a secret. Now maybe the secret's out."
