N.C. Postpones Death Penalty Vote

The latest on North Carolina's House vote to ban executions from WRAL.com.

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The North Carolina House has postponed a vote on a two-year ban on executions until later this month.

A close vote was expected Wednesday as the North Carolina House was scheduled to take up the bill that would stop executions for two years.

The measure would allow time to study the fairness of the death penalty. On Tuesday, a House committee narrowly voted to give the bill a favorable report.

Two years ago, the North Carolina Senate became the first legislative body in the South to approve an execution moratorium.

But the effort stalled in the House. This year's measure was introduced on the House side and has yet to go to the Senate.
