Letter to the Editor

I was happy to see in today's New York Times, a letter written to the editor about the death penalty in New York. It was simple, effective and hopefully will encourage others to follow suite.

To the Editor:

Gov. George E. Pataki is cynically misleading in saying the death penalty is necessary "to prevent dangerous killers from getting back on the streets" ("No Execution in the Killing of 2 Detectives," news article, Sept. 14). As the governor knows, such killers are prevented from ever getting back on the streets by life without parole.

Life without parole, unlike the death penalty, is a constitutionally valid part of New York law, and it means what it says.
