Leaving NYC (again)
Sadly, today is my last day in the office. This is the second time I've left....last summer I also had a 'last day'. The two months in NYC flew by…and now I'm headed back to California. The good thing is that I'll still be writing for the Blog while I'm at school—at least five posts a week. Please keep reading AND don't be shy to post a comment!

Some additional thoughts about the death penalty:
In the U.S., we seem fascinated by death, yet it is a topic that no one really wants to talk about; thus it remains 'in the closet' for most people -- unless someone close to them dies, and then death moves to center stage for a brief while.
Ironically, while we don't want to talk about it very much, perhaps hoping that by ignoring it in our conversations, it will bypass us. It (death)is constantly the topic of many of our t.v. shows: E.R., C.S.I., to name just a couple...not to mention all the cop shows and lawyer shows which apparently love to show gruesome scenes of murder victims and bodies in the morgue.
Contrast this attitude with, for example, Mexico, where death is very present in every-day life e.g. in the folk art, the white skull of death is frequently visible in a corner of the canvas, and in the folk dances, someone wearing a death mask, dances along with the other folks. The cemetaries in Mexico are lively and filled with flowers and people, and once a year, at least, families go to have picnics at the grave sites of their loved ones.
I'm sure other cultures, as well, treat death as more of a normal part of life.
Yet, our culture, (the U.S.) has a shocking crime rate and when someone commits a crime, we love to throw them in jail...where no 'rehabilitation' takes place...or, often KILL them.
Other cultures seem to me to be much more peaceful...or am I just dreaming?
