Death Row Inmate Walks Free

Seventeen years after being sentenced to death for capital murder, Ernest Ray Willis was finally able to hold his wife of four years upon release from prison in Texas. He was sentenced to death in 1987 after a fire -allegedly caused by arson- engulfed his house, killing two women living there.
After a trial established that Mr. Willis had received ineffective counsel from his lawyer and that he was not dangerous- a condition required for capital punishment- his case was reviewed and it was determined that the facts exonerated him.
