Deadline screening in Urbana sells-out!
We had a screening of Deadline at The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to commemorate the five year anniversary of the moratorium in Illinois. Rachael Dietkus, one of the organizers, gave me a great summary that I wanted to share.
The screening was sold out with 250 people and they had to turn away about 100 people. Wow. It's great the people are still so interested in the film and most importantly, the issues. There were some great panelists.

The screening was SOLD OUT (theatre capacity of 250) and I was told that over 100 people were turned away at the door. The media coverage was insane. Local affiliates of PBS, ABC, NBC, and CBS were all there. There was also newspaper coverage from the News-Gazette and Daily Illini, and local radio coverage from the Urbana-Champaign Indy Media Center, WILL, and WDWS. Reporter Steve Mills and photographer Chuck Berman from the Chicago Tribune were also there covering the event (and were quite funny and calmed my nerves).The entire day was amazing. Gov. Ryan, filmmaker Kirsten Johnson, and Bill Jenkins from Murder Victims' Families for Human Rights met with students and a few representatives from the YWCA prior to the screening. The film itself looked and sounded perfect. (When you're projecting a film from video or DVD, you cross your fingers and hope everything works the way it should – and it did!) The reception after was a great opportunity for sponsors and supporters to chat with the very special guests.
The local attention this screening received proves that there is great interest in abolition of the death penalty downstate. I will be writing letters to the editor later today as a follow up and also encourage people to get - or stay - involved.
Colleen Cook and Martin McFarlane at Boardman's Art Theatre deserve special thanks for going above and beyond to help make this happen. They handled the press and crowd with impressive vigor. Kirsten Johnson, Gov. Ryan and Bill Jenkins were remarkable in their poise and responses. They were all such an important element in the day’s success and I thank them unequivocally for their presence.

wow! that's terrific! it's so great that although Deadline had its premiere over one year ago, it's still such a well attended film at screenings. it shows that people are hungry for smart, challenging films about the death penalty! Congrats!
